Salma Hayek Jimenez (Spanish: Salma Hayek Jiménez, Arab. سلمى حايك, born on September 2, 1966) is a Mexican actress. The most successful Mexican actress in Hollywood since Carmen Miranda, Hayek acted in more than 30 films & was nominated for an Academy award. Salma Hayek is a well-known feminist, whose charities are directed towards protection of women against violence & immigrants - from discrimination.
Biography:
Beginning of career in Mexico:
Hayek was born in the city of Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz State, Mexico. Salma Hayek’s father, of Lebanese descent, worked as executive in an oil company & mother, Diana Jimenez - Mexican singer. Salma Hayek was brought up in well-to-do Catholic family & at the age of 12, she was put in Catholic boarding school for girls in Louisiana. She also had training in gymnastics & hoped to represent in Olympic Games.
After leaving the school due to behavior problems of Salma Hayek, for a short period, she returned to Mexico. She moved to Houston, where she lived with her aunt till she was 17 years old. Salma Hayek took admission in Universidad Iberoamericana, where she studied International Relations. At that time, she married Cameron Switzer. To utter surprise of parents, she left education to become an actress. At the age of 23, Hayek got leading role in a successful Mexican TV serial “Teresa” (1989), thanks to which, she earned the status of a national star. Later on, in 1994, Hayek acted in film “Miracle Alley”, which received more awards than any other film in the history of Mexican cinema.
